OSA or Orphan Support Africa is an organisation that
supports community based projects all over
The OSA is principally financed by the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation. The OSA will only attribute funds to projects after a
rigorous assessment. Projects request
for funding on the basis of community requirement and the OSA with evaluate
their claim. The contact we met was called Mabel and had been an orphan
herself. She spoke passionately about the challenges faced by orphans and was
very proud of the way she was well placed to help children from a position of
knowledge.
After the meeting we were shown a new piggery (which is a word), newly installed by the villagers using OSA funding. Pigs were chosen because of the size of their litter (typically 12-14). Once these pigs reproduce two pigs will be sent to each other village and their progeny will develop further food for the villages. The purpose of the meeting we attended was to ensure the elders gave their buy in to the piggery programme. After the meeting we got a chance to see some community theatre. Along with sport, drama is a key way of disseminating information. Judging by the laughter everyone enjoyed being educated.
Finally we went to a nearby school. We got to hear firsthand about the benefits the 40 OSA supported kids had received, from shoes to fees to books. The kids told us what they would like to be when they grew up, unsurprisingly lawyers and doctors were popular choices. Mabel shared with the children that she had been an orphan herself proving that with application these kids could be positive about the future.
